The Coin

Small change adds up – let it begin with you.

At CAWOOD, we embrace change – even the change we don’t want to see. Why? Change challenges us. Change stretches us. Change provides opportunities.

We’re giving out these coins to people who inspire us, and we’re asking them to pass the coins along to someone else. Because we believe small change adds up.

Check out the stories that go with the passing of the coins. Then, post your story!

  1. It’s true what they say about it taking a village to raise a child. Today, I passed a coin to Nilu, a woman who feeds, cleans up after, reads to, hugs and loves other people’s children, while their parents work. It’s a job she’s passionate about, because she knows she’s making a difference. She's amazing. After just two months, my about-to-turn-3-year-old son has started to sound out three-letter words. All I can say is, Wow! Thanks for giving our kids such a great head start!
  2. On Friday, I stopped for gas at Costco about 6:15 am. One of my favorite people works there, her energetic approach and welcoming smile and greeting always get my day off to a good start. She was hopping busy, but still had time for a greeting, and I was able to slip her a coin. I know she makes a lot of people feel special - what could be better. Thanks, L!
  3. It can be scary having a child, owning a home and being out of work. Such is the case, though, for a couple I know. And they realize they are not alone. Yet this woman, who watched my son for eight months, has a smile on her face every day. She loves her daughter and her husband. And they are working hard to hold their family together, despite the stress of incoming bills and little income. I passed a change coin on to her recently, because she continues to hope and pray for change every day, literally and figuratively. Patient, kind and giving, she does her best to focus her energy on the positive aspects of her life, little pleasures and good things to come. One of the ways she does that is by giving back. Last weekend, she took part in SOLV’s Great Oregon Spring Break Cleanup, where hundreds of volunteers collect thousands of pounds of garbage along Oregon’s coast. Despite, wind, snow, rain and hail, she and almost 3,700 brave volunteers removed an estimated 111,000 pounds of trash, according to SOLV’s website (http://www.solv.org/programs/spring_beach_cleanup.asp). Way to go! Her faith, positive attitude, and actions are an inspiration.
  4. Yesterday, Mayor Kitty Piercy received my first coin. She has a difficult job, especially in a town with as many opinions as Eugene. Yet, she stays positive, and always takes time to greet everyone she meets. Her attitude and willingness to listen help make small change possible. Thanks, Mayor Piercy!
  5. Drum roll please...My first CAWOOD coin goes to...a man who truly embraces change...and makes our change visible to the world...Mr. Cory Cailteux, our web designer and developer. He believed in the vision of what this website could be, came up with creative solutions to make our (sometimes crazy) ideas reality, and worked tirelessly to bring this little website to life. Thank you, Cory. I appreciate you and I'm encouraged by your desire to foster and grow change.
