Claiming your Google Places page

When your faucet is leaking and you're searching for a plumber, like many people today, the first place you go to look for help is most likely Google.
When you perform your search (let's say you live in Portland, OR), the first page that appears will look a lot like this.

What you'll immediately notice are the listings that dominate that page all have a little balloon with a letter next to their listing. These are Google Places (GP) listings which correspond to the map you also see on that page, in the upper right hand corner. Underneath the last GP listing is a link for "More results near Portland, OR", which gives the user a much more comprehensive GP list of plumbing businesses that serve the Portland area.

Now if you're a plumber in Portland, OR (or any type of business offering goods or services to a specific geographic area), you'd better be on this list, which means you'd better have your own Google Places page!

Claiming your Google Places page is easy (and free!). Start by creating your own Google account (by simpy setting up a username and password). Once you have your account, you can then claim your page by either having Google call or send you a postcard with a PIN code for verification. Once you place the code in the designated area on the verification page, you can now build and optimize your page. It's that simple!
